    Bronze Sustainable Industrial Design

    Bio-Coated Fibre Punnet as Rigid Plastic Replacement
    Salty’s award-winning bio-coated fibre punnet was developed as an alternative to traditional PET and rPET fresh produce packaging and was used by Zespri RED kiwifruit through Woolworths stores in New Zealand. The Wayfarer bio-coated paperboard punnet helps manage fruit moisture loss and gas exchange across the fresh produce value chain, helping to manage fruit waste, return more value to growers and reduce the use of plastic. The innovation was recognised with a Bronze Award for Sustainable Industrial Design at the 2025 Australasian Best Design Awards.

A World First: Compostable Vacuum Seal Bags Enter the Fishing Industry

Idealog profiled the development of Misty Lady, our home-compostable alternative to conventional plastic vacuum seal bags. The feature explored the origins of Salt of the Earth Packaging and the development of a New Zealand-made alternative designed for food, fishing and outdoor use.

Salt Bags — Gold Winner

2020

Salt Bags received a Gold Good Design Award in Communication Design – Packaging. The judges recognised the project for rethinking conventional carrier bags through natural materials, reusable design and the Japanese tradition of Furoshiki.

Misty Lady received a Gold Good Design Award for replacing conventional plastic vacuum seal bags with a compostable alternative. The award recognised both the environmental problem being addressed and the material and product development behind the solution.
