A WORLD FIRST FOR MUSHROOM GROWING.
Introducing Salty's Certified AS 5810 Home-Compostable Mushroom Grow Bag
Across mushroom cultivation, conventional plastic grow bags are used to hold grain, substrate and growing media through sterilisation, inoculation and cultivation. They're strong, transparent and functional — but after they've done their job, you're left with another plastic bag.
At Salty, we saw an opportunity to change that.
INTRODUCING A WORLD FIRST.
Our new Mushroom Grow Bag is AS 5810 Home Compostable certified as a complete finished product — creating a certified alternative to conventional plastic mushroom cultivation bags.
Not simply a bag made from compostable material.
The finished bag itself is certified.
DESIGNED FOR THE GROWING PROCESS
Mushroom grow bags need to do much more than hold substrate.
Grain and substrate are commonly sterilised using an autoclave or pressure sterilisation process before inoculation, creating a demanding environment for the packaging.
Our grow bag technology has been developed for mushroom grain, substrate and cultivation applications, including conversion and filling processes where autoclave sterilisation is required.
Because autoclave conditions can vary between growers, equipment and substrate loads, process validation should be completed using the grower's specific sterilisation cycle and equipment.
FROM VACUUM PACKAGING TO MUSHROOM CULTIVATION
We have spent years developing a stronger, more durable home-compostable film capable of performing in demanding food and packaging applications.
That technology has now opened the door to something completely different:
A HOME-COMPOSTABLE MUSHROOM GROW BAG.
Our transparent film provides the visibility growers need while delivering the barrier performance, seal integrity and durability required through grain, substrate and cultivation applications.
The bags are:
-
AS 5810 Home Compostable certified as a finished product
-
Designed for mushroom grain, substrate and cultivation
-
Suitable for autoclave/process validation
-
Transparent for substrate and mycelium visibility
-
Heat sealable
-

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Mushroom cultivation has an interesting contradiction.
Growers are producing food through a biological process built around fungi, organic substrates and natural decomposition, yet the industry still relies heavily on conventional plastic grow bags.
Those bags perform an important function.
But once the cultivation cycle is finished, separating organic growing material from plastic creates another waste stream.
A certified home-compostable grow bag creates an opportunity to rethink that relationship between cultivation, packaging and end of life.
Instead of designing only for the growing process, we're asking:
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BAG AFTER THE MUSHROOMS HAVE GROWN?
CERTIFIED MATERIAL ISN'T THE SAME AS A CERTIFIED BAG.
Our Mushroom Grow Bag is certified to AS 5810 Home Compostable as a complete finished product.
Under home-composting conditions, our compostable fil/bag is designed to be organically recycled by microorganisms into biomass, CO₂ and water.
For growers looking to move away from conventional fossil-based plastic, certification provides a clear, independently verified end-of-life standard.
DESIGNED FOR GROWERS. BUILT FROM PROVEN TECHNOLOGY.
This isn't where our material journey started.
It's where years of development have taken it.
The same material engineering behind our award-winning home-compostable vacuum packaging is now enabling us to tackle other difficult-to-replace flexible plastic applications.
Mushroom grow bags are one of them.
And we're only getting started.
GROW. HARVEST. COMPOST.
If you're a mushroom grower, cultivator, spawn producer or commercial mushroom operation looking to reduce conventional plastic across your growing process, the alternative now exists.
WORLD FIRST. HOME COMPOSTABLE. CERTIFIED.
AS5810 certified finished grow bag. Designed for mushroom cultivation and autoclave process validation. Made in New Zealand.
